Tintagel 2-4 Grampound Veterans

Cornwall Veterans League Cup
On a
cool windy morning, Grampound
started really well with Ben
Taylor skilfully planting a chip
over the home goalkeeper, who
was well off his goal line, into
the net with only minutes gone.
Grampound's passing looked a
little more controlled than in
recent matches but a bit of a
cock up around the Grampound
goal led to a simple equaliser
soon after. Tintagel
proceeded to take the lead
directly from a free kick when a
misaligned wall allowed a low
shot to creep inside the post.
Before half time Grampound
grabbed a fortuitous equaliser
when the home goalkeeper somehow
lost possession of a ball that
had been passed to him.
The ball was squared across the
6 yard bos and Matt Fletcher
made no mistake fro a few yards
out. The first half had
been fairly even.
Grampound's control and passing,
although better than in previous
games, was still varied, the
ball too often returned to the
opposition when under no
pressure.
The second half
looked as if it might be very
tough with Grampound playing
against a fierce wind.
However, the passing was a
little more confident and
crisper with far fewer attempted
passes going straight to
opposition players. In
addition, apart from a couple of
lapses, defensively the team did
not allow the home side to gain
the upper hand and kept attacks
at arms length in the main.
Grampound did concede an
unexpected and unfortunate
penalty but James Brooker made
an excellent save to keep the
shot out. Even with the
elements against the team, the
better chances were Grampound's
and two excellent strikes from
outside the penalty box by Giles
Farmer found the back of the net
to give Grampound a deserved win
and the team will go through to
round 2 of the Veterans League
