Match Report

Wendron 8-1 Grampound Veterans

8 March 2026
Cornwall Veterans League Cup Quarter Final

Grampound  managed to field 11 players only and some of these carried knocks from the previous week on a 3G pitch.  Grampound did well in the first half, managing to give Wendron, who had yet to conceded a goal this season, something to think about.  The team defended well but were unable to put too much pressure on the home side.  Wendron missed some half chances before taking the lead on about 25 minutes and then Grampound surprised themselves by scoring when Alex Knight collected the ball just inside the Wendron penalty area, beat his defender cleverly and smashed the ball high into the home net.  Shortly before half time, Wendron capitalised on a mistake and went ahead again but 2-1 at the break was respectable given Grampound's injury problems.

15 minutes into the second half a wide free kick on the right was awarded to Grampound and Alex Knight sent the ball over a crowded penalty area. Giles Farmer rose highest and his header from 10 yards scraped the wrong side of the goalpost.  Soon after, Wendron scored their third and as theground got heavier Grampound's legs struggled, especially with players carrying injuries and without subs available, and goals started to go in at the Grampound end.
This was a tough game against an excellent team and despite the final scoreline, the 11 Grampound players put in a terrific effort.
