Match Report
Grampound Veterans 5-5 Clays Veterans
Grampound won 4-1 on penalties
1 March 2026
Cornwall Veterans League Cup
Round 2
Match played at
Brannel School 3G pitch
The first 15 minutes was controlled by Clays as Grampound found it difficult to keep the ball and Clays passed it around neatly although no real chances were created. Eventually, Grampound managed to move up the pitch and in a bit of a goalmouth scramble Jules Woodman was first to a loose ball and smashed the ball home to give Grampound the lead. Soon after, Alex Makepeace was fouled as he went past a defender in the Clays penalty area and Ben Bould converted the penalty kick to extend Grampound's lead to 2-0, something of a surprise after Grampound's struggling start. Clays managed to pull one back but Ben Bould grabbed his second when he outpaced some defenders and on the run smashed a 25 yard volley into the top corner for a goal of the season contender. Again, Clays pulled a goal back before Grampound scored again, Jules Woodman meeting a corner on the volley and his shot flew into the top corner to put Grampound 4-2 ahead with about 20 minutes remaining. Unfortunately, Grampound conceded a couple of soft goals and at 4-4 the run of play suggested that Clays might snatch a lead. Grampound rearranged the team slightly and managed to gain the lead once more, Ben Bould chipping neatly past the advancing goalkeeper. With only minutes to go and 5-4 ahead Grampound certainly looked to be favoutites but again managed to concede another goal after losing the ball just outside the penalty area. The 5-5 result meant that penalties were needed and for the second time this season our penalty takers kept their heads and scored from 4 unsaveable shots while Clays missed their first and 3rd efforts, meaning that Grampound progress to the next round and an away tie at Wendron Veterans.
